Denton Wharf and Harlaxton Village

This circular walk can be started from a number of locations on the route and takes in the pretty villages of Denton and Harlaxton.  Note that it is possible to park at Denton Wharf, however, we do not recommend this as the access track is in a poor condition.  The instructions below start the walk at The Drift, close to Harlaxton Bridge, https://w3w.co/contained.viewing.grocers

1. Join the towpath on the right-hand side of the bridge, down the ramp and turn right going under the bridge shortly passing Harlaxton Wharf on your left.  [letter J on map]

2. Continue along the towpath until you reach Denton Bridge (No 65), cross over to reach Denton wharf.  [A]

3.  Continue up the rough track to reach the tarmac road. Turn left and in 300 metres, turn left again through a gate onto the access track for Denton Reservoir.

4.  Follow this track and after entering the wooded area, at a junction bear right, ignoring the track ahead. This will bring you to the steps leading up the embankment to Denton Reservoir.  [B]

5.  You can now walk in either direction around the reservoir. You will come to two footbridges where the feeder stream enters the reservoir. Follow the footpath with the stream on your left, go through a gate and then cross the track for the old railway line, go through another gate and follow the track to the tarmac road.

6. Turn left at the road, then right at the junction. Walking on the side of the road with the village hall on your left, continue up the road passing the Welby Arms on your right.  [C]

7. Follow the road around to the left passing the church on your right.

8.  At the top of the lane turn left past some houses and go through a gate and across a green paddock (with the school on your left) emerging on to a road. Turn right, follow the road to the end where there is a kissing gate to your left.

9.  Go through the gate and cross parkland to a narrow path between house gardens eventually reaching a road. Cross the road, turning right, after about 4 metres turn left to the path between houses. The path leads to a kissing gate. Pass through and follow the path across the field, through another kissing gate and cross a wooden footbridge.

10.  Continue, slightly uphill to a track. Our path lies on the opposite side of the track on your right. We take a diagonal path (indicated on the signpost) across the field to the right-hand corner reaching a road.

11. Cross the road, and directly opposite through the hedge, lies another path. Go through the kissing gate and follow the path across a field to a lane leading into Harlaxton village.

12.  Follow the road (West End) until you come to a junction with Rectory Lane. On your right is a metal gate, pass through the gate and follow the path through the field to a gate in the hedgerow. Continue through the field, rising uphill, and through another kissing gate to a field that might contain horses. An uphill walk brings you to a kissing gate.

15. Cross the road to the double wooden gates opposite and pass through.

16. Follow the path ahead with the hedgerow on your right to reach a metal ladder leading up to a road.

17. At the top of the ladder turn left and then at the first junction left again to return steeply to Harlaxton.  [F]

18.  At the junction with Church Street is a small green with a large stone memorial. Turn right to reach the A607 and the Gregory Arms. [G]
